An Impairment Rating Exam (IRE) is useful in determining which limitations an individual has after being involved in an accident or suffering an injury. The rating is calculated using specific guidelines to determine what percentage of an individual’s function has been lost due to an accident, injury or condition. The resulting rating, on a scale of 0%-100% (with 100% being considered totally and permanently disabled), helps clarify how the individuals’ compensation, medical treatment and benefits may be structured going forward. An impairment can be classified as severe or mild, permanent or temporary. During an Impairment Rating Exam, physicians utilize the American Medical Association’s “Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment”, ensuring that the report is unbiased and objective.
